Your tax identity, sorted in a day
An NTN is your identity number with the FBR, and it is the very first thing you need before you can become a filer. Without it, you cannot file a return, and you keep paying the higher non-filer tax rate on banking, property, and vehicle transactions. We take care of your NTN and IRIS account setup quickly and correctly, so you don’t have to figure out the portal yourself.

What is an NTN, and who actually needs one
An NTN, or National Tax Number, is your personal tax identity issued by the FBR through its IRIS portal. For individuals, it is simply linked to your CNIC, so once you are registered, the same number is used to file your return, get on the Active Taxpayer List, open a business bank account, and avoid the extra tax that non-filers pay on banking, property and vehicles.
Who needs an NTN
- Salaried individuals, who want to file a return and stay on the ATL for lower withholding tax.
- Business owners and sole proprietors, who need it to register a firm, open a business account, and issue proper invoices.
- Freelancers and IT professionals earning from Fiverr, Upwork or similar platforms, who need it to declare income and get filer benefits.
Documents you will need
- CNIC, front and back.
- Mobile number registered in your own name, for the verification code.
- Active email address, to set up your IRIS account.
- Proof of income source, such as salary slip, or details of your business or freelance work.
š” Businesses and sole proprietors need a couple of extra details, such as business name, nature of business, and office address. We share a simple checklist so nothing gets missed.
How the online process works
Registration happens through the FBR IRIS portal, where your details are checked against NADRA records and your account is activated. Done properly, it is quick, and with proper handling it is usually completed within 24 hours once documents are ready. Since small mistakes in the IRIS form can cause delays, it helps to get it right on the first attempt.
Personal NTN vs business NTN
For an individual, whether salaried, freelancer, or sole proprietor, your NTN is just your CNIC number, so there is nothing separate to remember. A company or AOP gets a distinct 7-digit NTN when it registers with the FBR. If you also sell taxable goods or services, you may separately need a Sales Tax Registration Number, which is different from your NTN.
How to check your NTN status
Once registered, you can check your NTN for free on the FBR’s Online Verification System, or through the Tax Asaan mobile app, using your CNIC or NTN. To check if you are an active filer, simply SMS ATL followed by a space and your CNIC to 9966. If your NTN exists but you are not showing on the ATL, it usually means your latest return has not been filed yet.
